Hello Stephan,
first, thank you for your kindness.
I must admit I used a technique which consists in mixing into the photo shot which has not been altered, real elements, in order to compose: actually, as I wrote, I merged two different pictures of the same event. I saw the man alone walking down the stairs, and the group of five people at the left. I knew I had to shoot this scene very quickly with this marvelous sunset light. So I stepped up to position myself right into the sea to avoid the tourist crowd, waiting for the exact instant (just a handful of seconds) for the man alone to be at the middle of the rock and made the first shot including the group of five... But the wave on the right was gone.. I made another shot ( just a few seconds later) in order to exclude the people of the scene and to include the right time for the wave to break on the rocks...
Ì was not sure it would work... I shot the two frames in manual mode (same speed, same aperture) and same distance of focus.
Just for the anecdote, I was at the same place at Tanah Lot more than 35 years ago, but we were no more than six people at that time. When I shot this picture, thousands of people were standing behind me and loudspeakers were vomiting noise eliminating the serenity silence of the holy place ... I was horrified by the way mass tourism has evolved over time. Nevertheless, I rediscovered the language (indonesian not balinese) I completely forgot for years and the spirit of balinese people with whom I shared sacred valuable moments during the Kuningan celebration...
I wanted to share with you that emotional moment. Thank you for reading.
